ROLF HOOK

Hello and welcome to my website.

It only shows a fraction of my work.

What others wrote about me and my work:

Rolf was born and bred in Germany, in the Rhineland-Palatinate, the most forested state in Germany, his family name is of Kentish origin. His father was a master cabinetmaker and architect and it was at his father’s knee that Rolf first learned to appreciate and understand the beauty and complexities of wood.  When Rolf was just 7 years old his father died and his English uncle Peter stepped in generously and took him under his wing. He was 10 years old when he came to England, to London and is still very moved remembering the welcome they received in this country.

He received several prestigious awards for his work, culminating in the –German State Award in Arts and Crafts- in the Rhineland-Palatinate. His biggest sculpture (5tons in all), a memorial is seen in Ireland's most famous National Park ‘Muckross House', Killarney.

Rolf’s connection with wood is indefatigable. He sees the precious beauty of the living tree and will never fell one for his art; instead he uses wood from trees that have naturally fallen. He explores the aesthetics of shape, form, texture and colour and his work reflects nature’s innermost beauty.

He says:

I have come a long way to combine the integrity, the character and beauty of a specific part of a tree with my idea. Both coalesce and pure, perhaps figurative form evolves, telling the story of origin, presence and fineness.

I like to meet interesting trees and people to explore what their own fallen trees hold and have to tell. We inspect, explore and work out a concept together, to let that tree live on in another piece.

The wrestle is a very peaceful, a very gentle one, at the end beauty will tell.

Next to this I carve indoor and outdoor pieces, small and big, these can be seen in my studio, or in exhibitions. Please feel free to inquire or make an appointment.
